History of The Meadows

Builders constructed the Meadows Subdivision beginning in the early 1960s. This was a perfect example of suburban post WWII construction, seeking to help people realize the American dream of owning a single family home outside of the city. Many of the first owners of these single-family homes worked for growing companies such as IBM and Sears.  Some residents had maids, and many put together a dream that resulted in the Meadows Pool. Construction began on the Meadows school began in 1965.

The Meadows included some features considered innovative for the times.  The designers included sidewalks and curbs, intentionally made wider streets to accommodate parked cars and two lanes of traffic, and used concrete for the driveways.  Each house had a postlight, eliminating the need for streetlights. This allowed the subdivision to retain a “country” style darkness while staying safe. The subdivision also has house-mounted post boxes.  In contrast, the homes in Oakview (the subdivision which preceded the Meadows) had gravel driveways without sidewalks, tar and pebble roads, house lights, and post-mounted mailboxes.

The Meadows subdivision was not (and still isn’t) incorporated into the Village of Lisle.  This was a big item of discussion in the late 1960s, but ultimately residents decided against incorporating.  The DuPage County Sheriff provides police protection and the Lisle-Woodridge Fire District provides fire and emergency services. As Lisle grew, visionary community leaders created other organizations to meet the needs of the entire Lisle community.

The Meadows Pool

The Meadows Pool is not affiliated with The Meadows Homeowner Association, to access the pool information and website please see the web address below.
A group of homeowners got together and dreamed of a recreation area that included tennis courts, barbecue areas, and pools.  This became reality when the charter members, pooled their resources, bought the land, and built the Meadows Pool and Tennis Courts.  There were plans for something more beyond the tennis courts but those plans did not materialize. There are many residents of LIsle who “grew up” at the pool.  Kids learned to swim, became lifeguards, and belonged to the swim team. Lessons were in the morning and the open swim was from 1 to 5. Swim team worked out in the evening until the open swim started again 7-9.  Kids had to leave the pool for fifteen minutes on the hour for the Adult Swim. The Lisle Park District didn’t exist yet and the Lisle Community Pool hadn’t been constructed yet. In the 1960’s, members could bring guests, but they needed to live at least five miles away.  This rule aimed at encouraging residents to become members. Unlike today, where a summer membership is available, charter members of the pool paid an investment amount and then yearly dues. Learn more at The Meadows Swim and Tennis Club.

The Meadows School

The school district had to grow fast as the Oakview subdivision and the Meadows were built at the same time.  By 1961, all the district’s kindergarten
Students took a bus to Main Street school.  There were four elementary (1-5) schools: Tate Woods, Main Street School, Schiesher School, and the Meadows School.  After kindergarten, kids attended the elementary school closest to their home. A referendum in the 1970s led to the construction of the current high school, even though it was predicted that enrollment would eventually drop.  After the 1970s, the school district ended up closing the Meadows school due to low enrollment numbers and selling Main Street School to the Village of Lisle. Over the years the school district changed the distribution of the students between the various schools.  The back of Schiesher used to be the Junior High and the current Junior High used to be the High School. When the Meadows school closed, the Park District rented the school for programs and preschool until purchasing the current Park District building. The school district has always owned the land.  This is the site of the new elementary school:  To visit Vision 202's website to learn more about the school, click
